What makes the best family safari experience in Tanzania?

If you are looking to book the best safari in Tanzania, you first need to consider which national parks will offer you the ultimate wildlife viewing experience and when is the best time of the year to go on your Tanzania safari holiday.

Our Tanzania safari experts have compiled the ultimate cheat sheet to help you with your trip planning.

A list of the best national parks that you can visit while on safari in Tanzania

Tanzania is a country of incredible beauty, with a vast amount of wildlife to enjoy amid stunning landscapes. There are many national parks to choose from, with the most famous being Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Serengeti is one of the world’s most celebrated wilderness areas and offers the best bucket list safari experience in Africa. It is renowned for its epic annual Great Wildebeest Migration, when an estimated two million wildebeests cross the vast plains of the Serengeti into the Masai Mara of Kenya. A descent into Ngorongoro Crater, which all year round is teeming with resident wildlife including the Big Five African animals (elephants, buffaloes, rhinos, leopards and lions), will ensure that all of your interests and the highlights of a Tanzania safari are experienced!

Additionally, you have other amazing national parks such as:

  • Tarangire National Park (which has one of the largest numbers of elephants across all of Africa)
  • Lake Manyara National Park (known for its tree-climbing lions)
  • Mahale Mountains National Park (a rainforest heaven filled with the world’s last remaining wild chimpanzees)
  • Ruaha National Park and Selous Game Reserve (Africa’s largest game reserve and unspoilt wilderness, filled with a variety of wildlife and the big 5 safari animals).
  • Mount Kilimanjaro National Park (Africa’s highest mountain and one of the world’s tallest free-standing mountains)

The list goes on, and on!

Welcome to Tanzania! Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) you will be warmly welcomed by a Wito Africa private vehicle and driver who will transfer you to Arusha Coffee Lodge for a pre-safari briefing and overnight stay. Dinner will be served in the main Plantation House and your butler will then show you to your family cottage, where you will spend two nights.

The next day, after a leisurely breakfast, your Wito Africa private guide will greet you and take you to Arusha National Park, where you will enjoy an exciting game drive and exploration. The Arusha National Park is home to the highest concentration of giraffes of any park in Africa, as well as Tanzania’s second highest mountain, Mt. Meru (14,977ft). Known for its stunning scenic views and its Ngurdoto Crater, Arusha National Park will give you a good introduction to the thrilling family adventures of the northern safari circuit. At the Momella Gate, an armed ranger will be waiting to accompany you on your walking safari, which will give you the chance to experience the wildlife up close. You will have a picnic lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive through the pristine areas of the Arusha National Park. Return to your accommodation in Arusha for dinner and an overnight stay.

After a delicious breakfast, your Wito Africa private field guide and vehicle will transfer you to Tarangire National Park for a morning game drive and exploration. Tarangire is known for its massive elephant herds, true sense of wilderness and backdrop of baobabs. During your game drives, you will marvel at your first sightings of what is probably one of Africa’s largest population of elephants, along with Cape buffalos, impalas, giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest who— in addition to some big cats and an abundance of mammal species—call the park their home. Lunch will be a classic safari picnic inside the park, while enjoying a glimpse of the great wilds of Northern Tanzania. In the afternoon, check in to your beautiful and intimate camp, get settled and enjoy sundowners and a magical African sunset by the campfire. Mouthwatering, locally sourced, slow-cooked meals will be served at your camp’s unique dining setting.

The next day, your guide will greet you and take you for another exciting morning game drive in Tarangire. Return to the camp for lunch and relaxation before setting out again in the afternoon for further exploration.

After a leisurely breakfast, your Wito Africa private guide will greet you at the lodge and transfer you in the direction of the Great Rift Valley to the crater highlands, for a taste of culture. Your guide will take you to a local Maasai village, or perhaps to the FAME Africa Hospital, where you will meet the people who started this local hospital in order to help the people of Tanzania (you could choose to visit a school, orphanage, village, hospital … whatever most interests you!). After lunch, transfer to the crater rim for relaxation and an overnight stay.

The next day, after an early breakfast, you will descend with your private safari guide to the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, where you will find spectacular scenery (arriving nice and early gives you the best chance of witnessing the predators returning from their overnight hunts) and game viewing in what has been described by UNESCO as the eighth wonder of the world. Ngorongoro is a collapsed volcano – an incredible natural amphitheater, 25 km across, and teeming with more than 30,000 protected animals, including all members of The Big Five. Depart from the lodge with a picnic so that you can maximize your time in the Crater. In the late afternoon, return to your lodge for sundowners and relaxation before your scrumptious dinner.

After a leisurely breakfast, your Wito Africa private guide will transfer you to the Lake Manyara airstrip for your scheduled flight to the Northern Serengeti. You will be greeted at Kogatende airstrip by a private safari guide and vehicle and taken on a gentle game drive on your way to your intimate lodge. From your Serengeti luxury accommodation, you will enjoy breathtaking views of the endless plains and stunning wildlife. A stay here offers a front row seat to the Great Wildebeest Migration. For the next three days and nights, you will explore the resident wildlife and stunning landscapes, and venture to the river for a chance to witness the dramatic river crossing!

OPTIONAL – Why not take an unforgettable flight over the Serengeti in a hot air balloon!

You will say goodbye to the Serengeti with hearts and minds full of incredible memories, and board your scheduled flight to Arusha Airport. Since your flight home will probably not depart until later in the evening, we have arranged a day room for you at the unparalleled Arusha Coffee Lodge. Here, you can wash up, rest and relax by the pool, take a tour of the coffee estate, and visit the remarkable workshop and gift store, Shanga. Shanga is an inspiring local initiative that strives to support the lives of Tanzanians with disabilities. We love connecting our clients to Shanga and encourage them to support their fair trade, handmade goods (made from recycled materials) as a way for us to highlight their amazing work.

In the evening, your driver will greet you and transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your scheduled flight home.

Tour's Location

When is the best time of the year to go on my Tanzania family safari holiday?
The best time to visit Tanzania is during the main dry season, from June to October, when good weather conditions can be expected across the country and wildlife viewing should be spectacular.

Another major highlight is the migration calving season in Serengeti (December to March), which coincides with good trekking conditions on Kilimanjaro and fair weather down on the coast as well.
Is a Tanzania safari safe?
Absolutely. Tanzania is considered to be a safe country to visit in Africa and is considered one of the best wildlife-viewing spots in Africa, which naturally provides an ideal destination for first time safari-goers as well as seasoned travelers.
Where does the tour start and end?
This private safari experience starts in Tanzania at the Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and ends the Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).

Our private safari guide and vehicle will meet and greet you upon arrival, and they will transfer you back to the airport on your last day of your safari experience with us.
Do you arrange airport transfers?
Airport transfers are included in the price of this private safari experience. In this case our private safari guide/representative and vehicle will be at the airport to meet & greet you upon arrival. How much does African safari cost?
Your total cost will vary depending on seasonality, size of group and specific travel arrangements, but this is a good guideline for an all-inclusive safari (everything except international flights):

$499 USD per person per day for 3-star accommodation
$699 USD pp per day for 4-star
$999+ USD pp per day for 5-star

It’s worth noting that, depending on your itinerary, your lodge cost will make up about 75–85% of your total safari trip cost. Our rates are per person sharing unless stated otherwise. Single supplements may apply. Accommodation are subject to availability.
