Overview

The Best Wildebeest Calving Safari ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Slow down: it’s wildebeest calving safari season! Marvel at the wildebeest calving season in the endless expanses of southern Serengeti, stand awe-struck at the sight of immense flocks of pelicans and flamingos at Lake Manyara, and get inspired by the amazing conservation and sustainability projects that Chem Chem has undertaken to make our planet a better place for the wildlife, the people, and the land. Changes in pace and landscape throughout this itinerary ensure that it offers relaxation and stimulation in equal measure – the perfect safari experience.

When Should I Book for the Calving Season?

Planning the best wildebeest calving safari requires making the arrangements in advance so you can be at the right location, at the right time for this amazing phenomenon. The appropriate months for Serengeti’s calving season are January, February, and March – is it during this time frame between the short rains of December and before the long rains of April where enough food (green pastures) and plenty of water is available for the new calves to be born and grow. If you have specific dates in mind, particularly for February when the calving season is in full swing, then we highly recommend to start booking a year in advance so we can ensure you have the availability for the dates you request. If you are not specific about dates within the January to March calving period, then we advise to start booking at least six to eight months ahead – the sooner the better for February! Since the calving season usually peaks during the month of February, it is natural for most travelers to be in the Serengeti during that prime time for wildlife viewing, therefore most intimate mobile camps that follow the migration get sold out quickly. Where Should I Stay and For How Long?

The best camps for the calving season lie in the Ndutu area, south of the Serengeti. The majority of the properties in this region are semi-permanent intimate tented camps set up each year strategically in the path of the migration, allowing you to leave the camp in the early morning ready for thrilling game drives returning whenever you are satisfied with your daily exploration in the vast green rolling plains of the Southern Serengeti. All eco-friendly Luxury Safari Tanzania camps that we book for our guests are spacious walk-in tented suites with large comfortable beds with verandahs and en-suite private bathrooms (hot water showers and flush eco-toilets). By staying in a mobile camp in the Ndutu, you will have a front-row seat to the wildebeest calving season and potentially witness the birthing right from the doorstep of your camp! We recommend you spend at least four nights in this region so that you can maximize your wildlife viewing!

While this is one of the best itineraries for anyone planning to catch a glimpse of the birthing season in Southern Serengeti and Tarangire over the months of December to March, for those with a little more time, we can customize and extend our Wildebeest Migration Calving Season safari to combine visits to the Ndutu region of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area with some time in the Central Serengeti and your choice of either Tarangire National Park or Lake Manyara National Park.

Itinerary

DAY 1: ARUSHA, TANZANIA (ONE NIGHT)

Welcome to Tanzania! Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) you will be warmly welcomed by a Wito Africa private vehicle and driver, who will transfer you to Legendary Lodge for a pre-safari briefing and overnight stay. Dinner will be served upon arrival, and your butler will then show you to your room for the night.

DAY 2 & 3: TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK (TWO NIGHTS)

After a delicious breakfast, your Wito Africa private field guide and vehicle will transfer you to Tarangire National Park for a morning game drive and exploration. Tarangire is known for its massive elephant herds, true sense of wilderness and backdrop of baobabs. During your game drives, you will marvel at your first sightings of what is probably one of Africa’s largest population of elephants, along with Cape buffalos, impalas, giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest who— in addition to some big cats and an abundance of mammal species—call the park their home. Lunch will be a classic safari picnic inside the park, while enjoying a glimpse of the great wilds of Northern Tanzania. In the afternoon, check in to your beautiful and intimate camp, get settled and enjoy sundowners and a magical African sunset by the campfire. Mouthwatering, locally sourced, slow-cooked meals will be served at your camp’s unique dining setting.

The next day, your guide will greet you and take you for another exciting morning game drive in this unique, wildlife-filled corridor of Tarangire/Lake Manyara. Return to the camp for lunch and relaxation before setting out again in the afternoon for further exploration.

DAY 4, 5, 6 & 7: SOUTHERN SERENGETI (FOUR NIGHTS)

After a leisurely breakfast, your Wito Africa private guide will transfer you to the Manyara airstrip for your scheduled flight to the Southern Serengeti. You will be greeted at Mwiba airstrip by a private safari guide and vehicle and taken on a gentle game drive on your way to your beautiful luxury lodge. Every year, from January through March, the vast green plains of the Southern Serengeti are filled with over a million wildebeest that come to calve in a synchronized birthing. This natural phenomenon makes your game viewing experience in the Ndutu area very rewarding. Along with thousands upon thousands of migratory herds, the incredible southern part of the Serengeti also provides natural habitats for many resident wildlife and African big cats, including lions, cheetahs and leopards, to mention just a few. Depart from your luxury lodge with a picnic lunch to explore further afield. Enjoy unlimited daily game drives in the Serengeti for the next four days and nights, surrounded by nature and abundant wildlife.

OPTIONAL – Why not take an unforgettable flight over the Serengeti in a hot air balloon!

DAY 8: KILIMANJARO & BEYOND (DAY ROOM AT LEGENDARY LODGE)

You will say goodbye to the Serengeti with hearts and minds full of incredible memories, and board your scheduled flight to Arusha Airport. Since your flight home will probably not depart until later in the evening, we have arranged a day room for you at the unparalleled Legendary Lodge. Here, you can wash up, rest and relax by the pool, take a tour of the coffee estate, and visit the remarkable workshop and gift store, Shanga. Shanga is an inspiring local initiative that strives to support the lives of Tanzanians with disabilities. We love connecting our clients to Shanga and encourage them to support their fair trade, handmade goods (made from recycled materials) as a way for us to highlight their amazing work.

In the evening, your driver will greet you and transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your scheduled flight home.

FAQs

What is the best month to go on an African safari?
The classic time to visit Tanzania is during the main dry season, from June to October, when good weather conditions can be expected across the country and wildlife viewing should be spectacular.

Another major highlight is the migration calving season in Serengeti (December – March), which coincides with good trekking conditions on Kilimanjaro and fair weather down on the coast, too.
Where does the tour start and end?
This private safari experience starts in Kenya at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) and ends in Tanzania at the Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Our private safari guide and vehicle will meet and greet you upon arrival, and they will transfer you back to the airport on your last day of your safari experience with us.
Do you arrange airport transfers?
Airport transfers are included in the price of this private safari experience. In this case our private safari guide/representative and vehicle will be at the airport to meet & greet you upon arrival. When you arrive at the airport, please proceed to the arrival areas and look for a sign with your last name written on it.
How much does African safari cost?
Your total cost will vary depending on seasonality, size of group and specific travel arrangements, but this is a good guideline for an all-inclusive safari (everything except international flights):

$499 USD per person per day for 3-star accommodation
$699 USD pp per day for 4-star
$999+ USD pp per day for 5-star

It’s worth noting that, depending on your itinerary, your lodge cost will make up about 75–85% of your total safari trip cost. Our rates are per person sharing unless stated otherwise. Single supplements may apply. Accommodation are subject to availability.
