Elephants and zebras will be seen as you make your way down into the ancient caldera, the famous, Ngorongoro crater. Admire some of Africa’s biggest bulls, tusks will curl upward, and venture further into the forest to look for leopards and come across a variety of antelopes. The trail will curve as it continues, passing wildebeests, rhinos, and a sizable herd of buffalo. Hippos will fill a small pool and lions will lounge in the open while soaking up the sun. There could be close to 20,000 animals and more than a dozen different species in one panorama. In this unforgettable journey, guests will see all of the Big Five animals (black rhino, elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo).

From the Ngorongoro Crater, the trail will descend onto the Serengeti’s endless grass plains. In the vicinity of kopjes, rocky outcrops that resemble the characters from The Lion King, live lions. You can frequently see these spotted cats on a hunt, and leopards and cheetahs are simple to spot in the low grass. There will be areas of the grass that are deserted and devoid of any animals. Then, after crossing a ridge, tens of thousands of grazers will be scattered across the plains, filling the air with their odors and sounds. While zebra gather in herds with black and white stripes, wildebeests will rut and gallop enthusiastically.

There is life all around you, and you have three days to enjoy the Serengeti’s abundance. Your luxury camp will be in the grasslands and will move with the seasons, keeping it close to the great wildebeest migration at all times. Watch the African Big Cats in action, and follow every move of the Great Migration. You will then witness the headlong rush of a Mara River crossing in the Serengeti, float about the expansive plains in a hot air balloon, drinking in an endless aerial view of the wildlife below.

This itinerary gives you a chance to slow down in Tarangire and enjoy a gentle game drive within the life corridor of Tarangire and Lake Manyara. For an even more soulful encounter, consider joining in an authentic cultural experience with members of the legendary Maasai tribe in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Based in Colorado, Joanne Matson’s wildlife photography journey began in Kenya over ten years ago. Seeing the country through the eye of a lens brought Africa to a new light, allowing her to share it with others.

DAY TO DAY ITINERARY

1
DAY 1: ARUSHA, TANZANIA (ONE NIGHT)

Welcome to Tanzania! Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by a Wito Africa private vehicle and driver who will transfer you to your beautiful accommodation in Arusha for a pre-safari briefing and overnight.

You will be invited to a special welcome dinner where you'll have a chance to get to know each other better as you enjoy your first night in Africa.

After dinner, your butler will show you to your rooms, where you will spend the first exciting night in Tanzania.

2
DAY 2: TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK (ONE NIGHT)

After a leisurely breakfast, your Wito Africa private guide will greet you at the lodge and transfer you in the direction of the Great Rift Valley to the Tarangire National Park for a game drive and exploration. Tarangire is known for its massive elephant herds, a true sense of wilderness and a backdrop of baobabs.

During your game drives, you will marvel at your first sightings of what is probably one of Africa’s largest populations of elephants, along with Cape buffalos, impalas, giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest who— in addition to some big cats and an abundance of mammal species—call the park their home.

In the late afternoon, return to your accommodation for sundowners, dinner and overnight (feel free to squeeze in a guided nature walk if you decide to head back to your intimate tented lodge by 3:45 pm).

After the guided bush walk, check in to your camp, get settled and enjoy some sundowners before having your delicious dinner on the patio.

DAY 3: NGORO NGORO REGION (1/2 NIGHTS)

After a leisurely breakfast, your Wito Africa private guide will greet you at the camp and take you for an exhilarating private guided walking safari with an armed ranger. This exclusive experience will open your senses and allow you to connect with the African wilderness uniquely. The gentle pace on a walking safari gives you time and breathing room to take in every sight, sound and emotion, and you really can get up close and personal with your surroundings.

A park ranger leads you on an animal tracking walk across the plains, pointing out clues and bringing you up close to a variety of wildlife, including elephant family, giraffe towers, zebra and even a buffalo herd. Your senses will tingle, your heart will race, and your vivid encounter with Africa’s large and small wildlife will forever be etched in your memory.

During your guided bush walk, you will get a chance to discover the day-to-day conservation efforts that the parks have set in place. You will patrol the park areas that share a border with the surrounding villages and learn more about the human and wildlife conflicts.

After the walk, your Wito Africa private field guide and the vehicle will transfer you to Lake Manyara National Park for a game drive and exploration.

Lake Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions, flamingos, breathtaking scenery and the soda-ash lake in the center. Lunch will be a classic safari picnic within the park while enjoying a glimpse of the great wilds of Northern Tanzania.

In the late afternoon, transfer to your beautiful lodge that borders Ngorongoro Crater for relaxation and overnight.

DAY 7: NGORO NGORO CRATER (2/2 NIGHTS)

Game drive out of the Serengeti through Oldupai Gorge/Shifting Sands.   OPTIONAL - Make a stop in the heart of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for a taste of culture. You will visit an authentic Maasai Village where you'll have the opportunity to interact with one of Africa's legendary tribes and learn more about their lifestyle, culture and customs.   Enjoy a picnic lunch, and then continue with a road transfer to your accommodation in the crater highlands for relaxation and overnight.
8
DAY 8: CRATER, KILIMANJARO & BEYOND (DAY ROOM CAN BE ARRANGED)

After an early breakfast, you will descend with your private safari guide to the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, where you will find spectacular scenery (arriving nice and early gives you the best chance of witnessing the predators returning from their overnight hunts) and game viewing in what has been described by UNESCO as the eighth wonder of the world.

Ngorongoro is a collapsed volcano — an incredible natural amphitheatre, 25 km across and teeming with more than 30,000 protected animals, including all members of The Big Five. Depart from the lodge with a picnic so that you can maximize your time in the Crater.

In the afternoon, you will make a timely transfer back to Kilimanjaro International Airport via Arusha. Upon arrival at the airport, gather your luggage and proceed to your departure lounge to board your scheduled flight home.
